The Best Non-Toxic Mineral Sunscreens (And Which I ‘d Buy Again)

Have you been trying to find a sunscreen that actually feels good on your skin and aligns with your ingredient standards?
After a personal health scare connected to environmental toxins, I started paying much closer attention to the products I was using every day.
Sunscreen wasn’t one of the first swaps I made, but it ended up being more confusing than I anticipated.
Finding the best non-toxic mineral sunscreen can feel overwhelming once you start sorting through all the marketing claims and ingredient labels.
The SPF space is full of marketing buzzwords, and it can be hard to tell which products are genuinely mineral-based and which ones only sound that way. (If you’re confused about the difference, I break it down here: Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen: What’s Actually in Your SPF?)
And honestly, I’m really picky about sunscreen. Because if it feels gross, I won’t wear it. But if the ingredients are gross, I won’t wear it either. 😂
I only use non-toxic mineral sunscreens made with non-nano zinc oxide. Every sunscreen on this list is one I’ve personally researched and tested myself. And I’ll tell you honestly which ones I’d repurchase and which ones I wouldn’t.
These are the formulas I reach for because they feel good on my skin, wear well throughout the day, and fit my standards for ingredients.

Best Lightweight Non-Toxic Mineral Sunscreen for Everyday Wear
If you want a mineral sunscreen that feels lightweight enough for everyday use under makeup, this is the one I keep coming back to.
Counter Daily Sheer Defense SPF 25

⭐️ RATING: 5/5 Stars | 🌞 FEATURE: Weightless Daily Face SPF | ✅ Shop It!
Counter’s Daily Sheer Defense SPF 25 is a lightweight mineral facial sunscreen. It’s made with non-nano zinc oxide for broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection.
The formula also includes vitamin E and chicory root extract and is designed to layer easily under makeup without a heavy sunscreen feel.
I’ve been using Sheer Defense for years. I started using it back when the company was Beautycounter.
This is the sunscreen that completely changed my experience with mineral SPF. It’s the first one I’ve found that doesn’t feel thick, greasy, or chalky on my skin at all. It’s lightweight, blends in easily, and feels more like skincare than sunscreen to me.
I also love how easily it layers under makeup. I can wear it on its own or under foundation and it doesn’t pill or feel heavy. And this is a HUGE deal for me because I’m very sensitive to texture.
This is the one I consistently reach for because it’s easy to wear every day, and I will definitely purchase it again.

- Broad-spectrum mineral protection
- Lightweight everyday wear
- Layers well under makeup
Pros:
- Comfortable for everyday wear

Best Non-Toxic Mineral Body Sunscreen
If you need a body sunscreen that feels lightweight enough to actually want to use consistently, this is the one that impressed me most.
Crunchi Sunlight Body SPF 30

⭐️ RATING: 5/5 Stars | 🌞 FEATURE: 80-Min Water Resistant Body SPF | ✅ Shop It!
Your face isn’t the only thing that needs protection. This body SPF makes it easy to cover the rest without that thick, heavy sunscreen feeling.
Crunchi’s Sunlight Body SPF 30 uses non-nano zinc oxide for broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. The formula is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes and includes plant-derived squalane to help keep the texture lightweight and hydrating.
It also comes in a recyclable aluminum bottle with a pump, which honestly makes it really convenient to use. And I personally appreciate the aluminum packaging since sunscreen tends to sit in my beach bag or by the pool all summer long.
I started using Crunchi’s sunscreen after Beautycounter closed, and I needed a safer sunscreen I could actually wear consistently. If a body sunscreen feels thick, sticky, or suffocating on my skin, I know I’m not going to want to use it regularly.
This one feels lightweight, spreads easily, and doesn’t leave a noticeable white cast on my skin.
I usually reach for it when I’m gardening, spending time outside, or at the pool. Out of all the body sunscreens I’ve tried so far, this is definitely one I would repurchase.
Top 3 Benefits:
- Broad-spectrum mineral sun protection
- Water-resistant formula
- Lightweight feel
Pros:
- Lightweight texture
- Spreads easily
- Doesn’t feel greasy on my skin
- Convenient pump bottle
- Up to 80 minutes water resistance
- Recyclable aluminum packaging
- EWG Verified
Cons:
- I personally didn’t have any downsides with this one
The Best Non-Toxic Tinted Mineral Sunscreens
I did a split-face test with these two and honestly… I’m calling it a tie. 😂
They’re both lightweight, easy to wear, and great for those lower-maintenance makeup days when you want a little coverage plus SPF without doing a full face.
The biggest difference comes down to finish and texture, which I’ll explain below.
Counter Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

⭐️ RATING: 4.8/5 Stars | 🌞 FEATURE: Tinted SPF + Skincare in One | That Glow | ✅ Shop It!
Counter Dew Skin is a tinted mineral SPF moisturizer. It’s designed to combine skincare, light coverage, and sun protection in one step.
It uses non-nano zinc oxide for broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and includes ingredients like black currant seed oil, peony root extract, and vitamin C.
The finish is dewy and glowy, with light buildable coverage that helps even out skin tone without feeling heavy.
One thing that immediately stands out for me with this one is the glow. It smooths onto my skin in a way that feels more like skincare than sunscreen.
I wear shade #3, and the coverage is exactly what I want from a tinted SPF. Light, buildable, and easy to wear without looking overly makeup-y.
This formula is a little thicker than the Crunchi one, but a little goes a long way. I usually apply a small amount with my fingertips, though it also works well with a brush.
It wears well throughout the day and gives my skin that healthy, dewy look. I like that I can reapply right over my makeup, if needed.
On lower-maintenance days, I’ll just wear this with a touch of blush and call it done. This is one I would buy again.
Top 3 Benefits:
- Dewy, glowy finish
- Light buildable coverage
- Skincare, SPF, and tint in one product
Pros:
- Natural dewy finish
- Lightweight coverage
- 8 shade options
- Layers well over skincare
- Works well for minimal makeup days
Cons:
- Slightly thicker texture than the Crunchi version
- Dewy finish may not be ideal if you prefer a matte look
- More shade options, but the undertones may be a little trickier to match
Crunchi Sunlight Tinted SPF 30

⭐️ RATING: 4.8/5 Stars | 🌞 FEATURE: Tinted SPF 30 | 5 Shades | ✅ Shop It!
Crunchi Sunlight Tinted SPF 30 combines mineral sun protection, skincare, and light coverage in one lightweight formula.
This tinted SPF is made with non-nano zinc oxide, stable vitamin C, and earth-derived pigments. It’s designed to even skin tone while still feeling breathable and natural on the skin.
What I love most about this one is the texture. It feels very lightweight on my skin and gives that “your skin but better” look without feeling makeup-heavy.
I wear the shade Light Medium, and the coverage is light and buildable. It’s enough to even things out while still looking natural.
This is the one I tend to reach for when I want my skin to look a little more polished but still very natural and low-maintenance.
It blends in easily with fingertips or a brush and wears comfortably throughout the day. It’s a keeper- I would buy this one again.
Top 3 Benefits:

- SPF, skincare, and makeup in one
Pros:
- Lightweight feel

My Honest Take After Testing Both
Here’s my dilemma: I love the dewy glow I get from Counter Dew Skin, but I love the lightweight texture of Crunchi Sunlight Tinted SPF.
Both are light, buildable, and easy to wear, just in slightly different ways.
If you prefer a glowier finish, I’d lean toward Dew Skin. If texture matters most to you and you want something that feels especially lightweight, I’d lean toward Crunchi.
But honestly? This one was too close to call.
(And if I didn’t feel ridiculous walking around with two slightly different shades on my face, I probably would’ve kept testing them side-by-side longer. 😂)
A Good Everyday Non-Toxic Mineral Face Sunscreen
This one landed lower on my list personally, but it’s a solid mineral SPF option depending on your preferences.
Crunchi Sunlight Facial SPF 30

⭐️ RATING: 4.5/5 Stars | 🌞 FEATURE: Everyday Face Protection | ✅ Shop It!
Crunchi’s Sunlight Facial SPF 30 is a mineral facial sunscreen made with non-nano zinc oxide for broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection.
The formula is designed for everyday wear and is made for all skin types. It’s also intended to layer well under makeup without leaving behind a noticeable white cast.
I started using Crunchi’s sunscreen when Beautycounter closed and I needed a safer sunscreen option.
This facial sunscreen feels a little thicker and heavier on my skin compared to Counter’s Sheer Defense.
This one isn’t quite as comfortable for me to wear under makeup, simply because of the slightly heavier feel. It also takes a bit more effort to fully blend in on my skin.
That said, it still performs well and I know a lot of people genuinely love this formula. For me personally, though, I would repurchase Counter’s Sheer Defense before this one.
Top 3 Benefits:
- Broad-spectrum mineral protection
- Designed for everyday facial wear
- Layers well under makeup
Pros:
- No noticeable white cast on my skin
- Good everyday facial SPF option
- EWG Verified
Cons:
- Felt heavier on my skin than Counter Sheer Defense
- Took a little more blending for me personally
- I personally didn’t enjoy it under makeup as much

A Non-Toxic Mineral Sunscreen for Face and Body
This one had some things I liked, but texture-wise it just wasn’t my favorite compared to the others on this list.
Happy Ocean Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45

⭐️ RATING: 3.5/5 Stars | 🌞 FEATURE: Water-Resistant Face + Body SPF | ✅ Shop It!
Happy Ocean Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45 uses non-nano zinc oxide for broad-spectrum mineral sun protection. It’s marketed for face and body use.
The formula is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, reef-conscious, and made with ingredients like aloe vera, green tea, turmeric, and tulsi.
It has a solid ingredient list overall, which is what originally made me want to try it.
For me personally, though, this one mostly came down to texture.
Compared to the Crunchi Body SPF, I had to use more product to cover the same amount of skin. The formula felt thicker and harder to spread.
It also left a bit of white cast on my skin, though not enough that I’d call it severe.
Honestly, the biggest downside for me was the feel. It stayed a little tacky on my skin and felt heavier than I personally prefer, especially in hot weather. There is no way I could use this on my face.
I’ll still use the tube I bought, but it’s probably not one I’d repurchase over some of the others on this list.
Top 3 Benefits:
- Broad-spectrum mineral sun protection
- Water-resistant for up to 80 minutes
- Designed for face and body use
Pros:
- EWG Verified
- Solid ingredient profile
- Works for face or body if you prefer a thicker texture
Cons:
- Thicker texture
- Takes more product to spread evenly
- Felt tackier and heavier on my skin
- Too heavy for me to use on my face

FAQs About Non-Toxic Sunscreen
What’s the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen?
Mineral sunscreens use ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to physically protect skin from UV rays. Chemical sunscreens use UV filters like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octocrylene, and octinoxate that absorb UV radiation instead. For the full breakdown, including the ingredients I personally avoid and why: Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen: What’s Actually in Your SPF.
Why do you prefer non-nano zinc oxide?
Research around nanoparticles and long-term exposure is still evolving, so I tend to take a more precautionary approach. Non-nano zinc oxide is considered less likely to penetrate the skin compared to nano-sized particles, which is why I personally choose non-nano zinc in my sunscreen.
Do mineral sunscreens leave a white cast?
Some do, especially older formulas. But many mineral sunscreens have come a long way, and newer formulas are often much more sheer and wearable than you might expect. Texture, finish, and white cast still vary a lot from brand to brand, though.
Do you wear sunscreen every day?
Not always. I believe in getting real sun too, especially earlier in the day. The sun has real benefits, and our bodies need it. But there’s a big difference between intentional sun exposure and spending hours outside in peak sun with no protection. That’s when I prioritize sunscreen.
Final Thoughts
Finding non-toxic mineral sunscreens that actually works and don’t leave you looking washed out used to feel impossible.
These are the sunscreens I’ve found myself consistently reaching for because they align with my ingredient standards and actually feel good enough to wear.
